The Nigerian Army, being the foremost branch of the Nigerian Federal Armed Forces, has established a system of barracks throughout the country.  These barracks provide quarters for troops as well as serve as hubs for military activities.

These barracks contribute significantly to the operational as well as the normal day to day functioning of the Nigerian Army in providing convenient and fitted locations for its operations, training and accommodation all over the country. Each barrack helps to guard the borders of Nigeria and aides in maintaining peace within the country as well.

The Biggest Nigerian Army Barracks: Giwa Barracks

Giwa Barracks is strategically located in Maiduguri, Borno State, and is among the largest military barracks in Nigeria.

This barracks has been critical for the Nigerian military because the northeastern part of the country, in which it is positioned, has seen the deployment of troops to neutralize the Boko Haram insurgency which is partly the reason for establishment of the base.

Being the central base for Nigeria’s military involvement in the region, it is important in the order and mitigation of the present day pressures that the region experiences.

Key features and importance

  1. Strategic importance: Giwa Barracks is not only notable on account of its huge size but also in order to protect the region from insurgent attacks. The army responded with active deployments from Giwa accepted a battering in the long-running insurgency within Borno State, particularly from Boko Haram terrorists.
  2. Capacity: The barracks has the capacity to host hundreds of soldiers including ranked officers and personnel on operations. It has sufficient military gear and has indoor facilities for training and military strategy planning and logistics.
  3. Military Detention Centre: One of the largest military detention containment especially for suspected terrorists and terrorists-related activities in Nigeria is located within the barracks. This has rendered the barrack a hub of both national and global interest especially in the last years due to the issues of human rights that have arisen.
