First University In Western Nigeria: University of Ibadan (UI), Oyo
The University College Ibadan (UCI) was first set up in 1948 as a constituent college of the University of London. Consequently, even though UCI was free to handle its affairs without interference, the degrees awarded were from the University of London.
In the beginning, UCI offered education in the subjects of science, healthcare, nutrition and the humanities. UCI became UI University in 1962, making it a full-fledged university.
After the period of independence, the rate of expansion and development of UI was remarkable. New faculties were established including those of agriculture, education, and law.

The number of admitted students increased, surpassing 5,000 by the end of the first decade of 1970. The institution embarked on several initiatives to promote African studies and culture, such as establishing the Institute of African Studies.
Likewise, UI assisted in the establishment of universities in Nigeria by helping the new institutions that were coming up. The University of Ibadan is still regarded as one of the best universities in Nigeria even though it is the oldest.
UI has maintained high academic standards and continues to have the College of Medicine, which has been known to produce several thousands of medical graduates who are presently working within Africa’s healthcare system.
