The Pioneer Institution: Ahmadu Bello University (ABU)
Ahmadu Bello University is the first to be established in Northern Nigeria and the oldest institution that offers a degree program in the history of higher education in Nigeria.
The University was established in the North in 1962 because of its founder, the late Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello (Sardauna of Sokoto), a Nigerian politician and a renowned leader.
ABU, which is located in Zaria, Kaduna State, was established bearing in mind the educational limitations in the northern part of the country enhanced rate of higher learning amongst the people. During the formative years, the university laid emphasis on the establishment of the faculties of arts, science, and social science.
The university has expanded its physical coverage significantly and offers various undergraduate and postgraduate courses in other fields in engineering, medicine, agriculture, law, and the management sciences. ABU is famous for its focus on various aspects of research and development that aim at national growth in Nigeria.
There is visible evidence of ABU’s focus on community service and outreach in the numerous activities organized by the university for the benefit of faculty and students. The university has also developed relations with foreign universities thus increasing its research capacity and academic mobility.
ABU today is referred to as the citadel of learning and has produced a large number of graduates ready to take on the challenges presented by the fast-changing environment of today.
