First Established University In Eastern Nigeria: University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)
University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) is the first university to be established in the southeastern part of Nigeria and the first indigenous university to be established in the American style of education in Nigeria.
Its establishment, initiated by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, was premised on the development of knowledge and fostering self-reliance. The institution in its location has excelled in many aspects including but not limited to engineering, as antelope technology, medicine, Drama and Fine Arts in Africa.
UNN boasts of over twenty thousand students and remains one of the few institutions in Africa which offers undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Astronomy within designing programs.
With UNN current management under Professor Charles Arizechukwu Igwe who is the Vice-Chancellor of UNN and has been repositioning it as a “A list” university in Nigeria.
UNN is affiliated with the Association of African Universities (AAU); the Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN); the Institute of African Studies; the Institute of Education; and the Institute of Development Studies among others. Also, UNN holds the record of being the first land-grant university in Africa.
UNN has numerous other esteemed contenders for the Honorary Doctorate such as Arunma Oteh World Bank Vice President and Treasurer, Godwin Emefiele the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, former World Bank Vice President Obiageli Ezekwesili, and many other respectable individuals.
