Who Was The First Commandant General of NSCDC?

Abiola Aturamu was the first Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) between 2004 and 2005.

His leadership came at a critical juncture after the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Act was enacted in 2003, which had legally established the functions of the NSCDC in civil security and defense in Nigeria.

Ituramu faced the task of organizing and placing the corps in a manner that would fit its new role after the law came into effect.

Aturamu’s era was characterized by the transformation of the NSCDC from an ad hoc uncoordinated civil defense voluntary society into an elite paramilitary organization.

The foundation that was laid under his watch was crucial in establishing appropriate administrative structures, operational procedures, and the overall system in which the Corps would function in the future.

While Aturamus was in office, protection of national key assets like oil pipelines and electricity masts was one of the main objectives of NSCDC. Those assets were always prone to vandalism and operations targets toward them were commissioned by Aturamu.

He also made certain that NSCDC was recognized as an organization that cares for national interests and assets, specifically in the oil sector.

Under this leadership, measures were taken to ensure that officers were trained on how to handle disasters and internal security issues.

Even though the NSCDC was in its infancy, these early training activities prepared the organization for any future crisis response and disaster management activities, thus enhancing the capacity of the Corps to save lives and properties in times of emergencies.

Abiola Aturamu’s time in office was short but succeeded in laying the foundations of NSCDC as an agency of national security management.

His tenure created a conducive environment for progression and development placing the Corps in a position to cope with bigger security and civil defense concerns in Nigeria.
