The central focus of the Nigeria Security & Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) is to protect Nigerians’ lives and properties. The Civil Defense Corps comprises organized groups of people who have been provisioned and trained to react to emergencies or disasters.
The Civil Defense Corps provides search and rescue operations in emergencies, notably earthquakes or flooding. NSCDC has its place in the internal security of the country by protecting human and economic resources and ensuring the protection of strategic facilities, hence, it is an indispensable agency in the security architecture of Nigeria.

Functions of NSCDC
1. Protecting National Assets
One of the central roles of the NSCDC is ensuring the safety of important national facilities including but not limited to electricity generation plants, oil and gas pipelines, telecommunication systems, and other government installations. They ensure that such essential services and utilities are protected from sabotage, looting, or aggression.
2. Disaster Control
The NSCDC equally attends to issues of disaster control, risk management, and mitigation. They also intervene in health disasters like floods and fires, or structural ones including accidents to help with rescues and assist individuals in trouble.
3. Anti – Vandalism Activities
The NSCDC is also tasked with the responsibility of control and protection from invasion by the bad tendency of the society which is the destruction of the civilized structures from the utilities including the pipelines and the facilities open to the public.
This is a major social problem in Nigeria and therefore, NSCDC has the mandate to reduce the scope of this particular crime.
4. Regulation of Private Security Firms
The NSCDC is responsible for the oversight of private security companies in Nigeria. It ensures that these firms operate within the confines of the law.
To this end, the organization inspects, licenses, and supervises the activities of private security firms in order to ensure compliance with standards and protect society.

5. Intelligence Gathering
The Corps is responsible for the collection of intelligence in support of internal security threats and vulnerabilities. This includes surveillance of certain groups or individuals involved or likely to be involved in a criminal act, including but not limited to, smuggling, terrorism, and trafficking.
6. Crisis Intervention
As part of its mandate, NSCDC also engages in local conflict resolution to prevent conflicts from escalating into violent confrontations. They step in to ensure that order is not disrupted.
7. Environmental Protection
The Corps also helps in environmental preservation by implementing environmental regulations, assisting in the control of environmental pollution, as well as minimizing the health consequences of the adverse forces of nature.
8. Training and Reorientation
In addition, NSCDC organizes training and campaigns intended to inform the public about safety measures, civil protection, and other aspects relating to internal security.

Founding And History of The NSCDC
The inception of the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps (NCDC) can be traced to 1952 which was during the era of British colonial rule in Nigeria. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) is a paramilitary body in Nigeria set up by the government of Nigeria.
It is primarily charged with providing measures against threats and any kind of attack or disaster that may occur in the country.
The unit was established in 2003, however, traces of this body can be found as far back in time as during the Nigerian Civil War, in the 1960s when it emerged as a humanitarian group to ameliorate civilian suffering.
The major objective of NSCDC is to achieve peace, safety, and security in Nigeria, by providing additional services that other security agencies, such as the Nigerian Police Force and Nigerian Armed Forces are unable to offer.
NSCDC is also an important player in internal policing, disaster management, and protection of the nation’s assets and resources.
