The southern region of Nigeria has many forms of higher institutions like the federal, state and private universities. This region, which is known for its rich culture and economic importance, has been able to establish many universities that offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses, numerous in sciences, technology, humanities, law, and social sciences.
Considering that both private and public universities are found in this area of southern Nigeria, it is clear that it contributes significantly to the enhancement of the educational provision both in nigeria and outside nigeria.

First Established University in Southern Nigeria: University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT)
The first federal university in the South East of Nigeria is the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), which was established in 1975. It has notable engineering and health science colleges, and thus, has greatly contributed to the growth and development of Nigeria through the production of well-educated personnel.
The institution has received international recognition for its petroleum engineering research and tropical health sciences because it is strategically positioned in the manufacturing hub of Niger Delta.
Several prominent figures in Nigeria and other nations have attended the University of Port Harcourt. These include former president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan; Agbani Darego, the very first African to win the Miss World beauty pageant; Nigerian singer, Timi Dakolo; and Richard Mofe -Damijo (RMD), a Nigerian actor.
One of the unique features of the university is the Institute of Petroleum Studies (IPS), which is in partnership with the French Institute of Petroleum (IFP) School in France.
The IPS offers specialized postgraduate courses in the area of petroleum engineering and other related fields. Also, UNIPORT is the first institution in Nigeria to teach and graduate the first batch of nuclear engineers.
