First Emir of Kano:Suleiman dan Abu Hamma (1805 – 1819)

Suleiman dan Abu Hamma was the first Emir of Kano, who is a very important person with respect to Northern Nigerian history.

Suleiman was a well-known and devoted Muslim leader from the Hausa ethnicity, who rose to power at a time when the Fulani jihad led by Usman dan Fodio in the early 19th century, was starting to sweep over the Hausa states in a battle against what they considered impurities in the Islamic faith.

He ascended the throne of Emir after the conquest of Kano by the Fulani within the year 1806 whereby there was centralization of Islam.

The leadership of Suleiman was crucial for the incorporation of Kano into the expanding network the fulani emirate that was taking shape throughout Northern Nigeria.

As the first Emir, his intention was to build empires, improve Islamic practices, and raise the levels of education in the area.

His administration increased commercial activities and made Kano an economic giant in the western African region, while he is also credited with propagation of Islam and putting in place a political system that would later be practiced by the following emirs.

The effects of Suleiman dan Abu Hammas’s life and achievements can still be felt in the present day Kano Emirate. He was responsible for the development of the structures for Islam and socio-economic growth in the area.

Current Emir of Kano: Muhammad Sanusi II

Muhammad Sanusi II

Sanusi was born into a notable family on July 31, 1961, to Muhammad Aminu Sanusi and Saudatu Anduwa Hussain. Within his ancestry, there exist multi-generational imams and honorable justices. Sanusi was appointed the Emir of Kano on 8th June 2014, following the death of his great uncle Ado Bayero.

However, his coronation was not without controversies as some quarters viewed it as political to shield him from fraud charges related to his previous position at the central bank. Although he lost his title in 2020, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reinstated Sanusi as Emir on 23 rd May 2024.

As the Emir, Sanusi has focused on transforming culture in Northern Nigeria and has used the elevation to fight pressing matters such as the Boko Haram menace, child marriage and the demand for more educational facilities.

It is important to note that Sanusi was the grandson of Emir Muhammad Sanusi I (1954-1963), a man of uncompromising integrity and service to the public. Known for his visionary leadership, Muhammad Sanusi I expanded the economy of Kano by encouraging industries, canals for agriculture, and an international airport.

Ruling over the state with a focus on the modernizing aspects of his role, Muhammad Sanusi I nevertheless fulfilled the traditional aspects of the emirate by leading Friday prayers and acting as a sharia judge.
